Tucked between residences, Volunteer Park allows the serene views of English Bay to filter into the neighbourhood. Towering poplar and locust trees line a pathway that leads to the pebble beach below.
This site was once the location of Seagate Manor and two other smaller, private residences. They were all demolished in 1977 after being purchased through the Park Board's Land Acquisition Fund. The purchasing of waterfront property along Point Grey Road, to open it for public access, has long been an objective of the Park Board. In 1985 the Park Board was petitioned by the Vancouver Volunteer Centre to name this area Volunteer Park in recognition of all city volunteers and as part of Vancouver's Centennial Celebrations.
